I have recently returned home after a trip to Stockholm and my first visit to the Vasa Museum. After spending many years reading about Vasa, to see her in reality was a humbling experience. The way the ship is displayed and interpreted for visitors is an example that other museums should follow. Looking at the gun deck replica a thought crossed my mind: The closest historic ship to my home is HMS Trincomalee, a frigate from 1817, and I realised that a seaman from Vasa would probably have felt quite at home on Trincomalee, even though the two vessels are separated by nearly 200 years. Its amazing how naval technology remained virtually unchanged for so long.
