Hi all I am just of putting up the standing rigging and the instructions have the shrouds and ratlines the same colour ie brown. Is there any evidence that the ratlines and shrouds where tarred or just the shrouds as climbing up with tarred ratlines must have been quite uncomfortable for the crew. Martyn

I'd say back in the 17th century nobody would give a hoot if climbing up tarred ratlines was uncomfortable for the crew. I'd go for ratlines and shrouds in the same colour. The historic models of the Prins Willem (1651) and the Dutch Yacht in the Kriegstein Collection both seem to still have most of their original rigging and on both the ratlines seem to be tarred.

Thanks for the information Peter. They were certainly not interested in health and safety in those days. I will go with tarred ratlines. Thanks again. Martyn

On the original shrouds and ratline fragments we have, the amount of tarring is the same.
