Thanks Alexander, I'll keep that in mind. I'm unexperienced with wood and used the wood supplied with the kit, If I remember correctly its obechi. I've heard the boxwood and pear would have better grain for detail work but I wanted to try and do them as the instructions suggested, not knowing how big parts to buy and so on. It's really soft to work with, a little like clay but I think I will try other material next build when I'm more experienced with it all. I think the detail level I get on these corresponds to the details on the plastic sculptures.

Hi Matti,
Box and Pear are both a good choice. Pear is easier to work with because it is not as hard as box. The best results with tiny carvings you will get with box because of its edge strength.
If you want to exercise carving in a bigger scale, I recommend lime. This is the wood, I started with.
You will see, you will improve your talent very fast, with some practice.
Cheers, Alexander

The knights are finished. I tried to clean them up some. They are not perfect by any means but I will use them as they are now and see them as my first attempts at carving. /Matti

The Hercules sculptures are lacking in the BB kit and I wanted to try to carve them. Here is the first one: Now I´m not sure what wood it was included in the kit. It didn't stink like the obechi planks did when put in hot water, and its harder and more brown. /Matti

Hi Matti,
Looks good! Looks like you improved your carving skills in no time. What's next? More scratch carving?

Thanks Jules, yeah I'm considering carving a few more sculptures that are not included in the kit.

Also worked on the capstan. It's the original with a few modifications; slightly smaller and added or reshaped details. /Matti

Looking good, Matti! One note on the capstan: the original has four holes for bars, rather than the three they suggest in the kit, and the outside is carved in a spiral, as in the reconstruction drawing below.
