Well, after completing the Sergal kit I decided to finish the Corel kit which I had already started. Sorry about a lack of build photos. This is where I am at - the basic hull is done & I am currently working on the galleries, bad castings & all. I decided to show some of the hull nailing & scarf joints.
Hi everyone. I have finished the stern area.Since the castings are mostly incorrect I painted them as I saw fit. Also built the front railing. I didn`t care for the odd looking "dolphins" they provided so I used some turned wood stanchions instead. Also made some of the deck pulleys by laminating short & long strips of wood.
Hi Shel - the hull planks are separate pieces at the scarfs but the whale scarfs are just scribed. The whales are just too narrow at this scale to make a good tight joint. I did not try to show every single scarf - too many of them. If the figures were more accurate I would probably have spent more time getting them exactly right. I am no carver so trying to carve all those little figures at this scale will not be attempted.
Hi everyone - the hull is nearly complete now. All the figures & guns installed & railings built. There are errors here & there like no caged figure under the catheads, but overall I think it`s` much improved from the basic Corel kit.
Much improved indeed! One can easily get a bit overwhelmed trying to fix all Corel inaccuracies I think. I love your colour scheme. Did you paint the gilded Corel sculptures or did you replace them? The hull planking bolts look convincing too. What did you use for these?
Thanks for your nice comment. The figures are all Corel, which I painted - I am no sculptor. You are correct about all the inaccuracies. The nails in the whales are track fixing pins from the model railroad section of my local hobby shop - very nice small nails that are already blackened. The smaller nails in the hull planking are called micro-spikes - very small square l-shaped nails that I cut the "L" off of. They were a bit fiddly to do because of their small size but I think the effect turned out ok. They are also from the model railroad section. I tried to get the Billing Vasa fitting kit for it`s much better figures but I was told it is unavailable. Even though they are plastic they are much better than Corel`s.
Hi Vlad - I am aware of the wrong placement of the channels.I mounted them above because I could not get the chainplates to fit otherwise due to the poor design of the kit & I did not want to scratch build them. There are many other problems with the kit which I did not change such as the poor castings & incorrect hull shape. The problem with the chainplates is they are too short.
