How to shape the rudder. Roughly. (Found the numbers I was looking for. At some time in the past, this was sufficient information for me. I thought I had more detailed measures.. Like the extent on the length of the rudder the thin part is.) Cheers! Peter

Thank you Vlad, That drawing shows both front and aft side well. I believe that is Sam Svensson's drawing from just after the rudder was raised? I'm sure I have it somewhere as well. I think I had several drawings of the rudder, If I can only find my stash of Vasa JPGs.. It's on a USB drive somewhere probably.. ;-) Your rudder looks excellent! My rudder photos from the museum are still on the web though: members.optusnet.com.au/jenssen/vasapics.htmlthanks, Peter

I found this rudder drawing in 'Vasa I' too. Here's another picture from my build. An old one. The first runs of the second layer planking. May be of use for people who need to know how walnut colour ages: (Quite different to today's colour) /Peter

Good to see that you have restarted your Vasa. Your old log has been one of the logs for me to start with the Vasa and I had the plan to make the same modifications as you did. however I did not made these modifications and kept the frames from the Corel kit unchanged, I only replaced the visibile wood in wallnut. I keep following you, as I am now in the stop mode with my Vasa

Thank you Jan, I'm very flattered to have been of inspiration, although it seems like I failed in deterring from buying Corel. Initially, I started planning for a scratchbuild of F.H. Chapman's 'Camilla', (back in 2001 - 2002) but I thought I'd just 'get warmed up' on building a kit. I got the Corel Vasa as a birthday gift from my wife and thought that'd be perfect and started building straight away. However, Lars Bruzelius (he gave a rather scathing assessment ;-) ) warned me to use caution, -if it was similar to what Corel presented to the Wasa museum in the eighties... That's when I ordered the plans (that's the plans that are now the old plans I believe has been made available on this site by Fred Hocker. (Thanks Fred, digital copies are great to have too!) By the time I got the plans, I was already into the planking phase, so the reshaping of the hull was rather tricky. I don't recommend this route, you cannot easily adjust the Corel frames as the stations used are different to the museum plans. You'd need to do quite complicated re-lofting. Best to scratch build to get the shape rightt. Or pick another kit. I love the result you accomplished with your kit. I can see a lot of modifications from what my kit parts looked like. Funnily, your lion looks different to mine? Cheers, Peter

I haven't cut the recesses for the iron straps yet. I suspect they are tapered. i.e. recessed at the fore end, but not the aft end. No rush, I haven't made the pintle and gudgeon assemblies yet. The Corel ones will not fit on this version of the rudder as they are way too crude. Also, I will finish the hull better before attaching the rudder in order to avoid knocking it. Compared to original Corel rudder. Cheers, Peter Attachments:

Experimenting with preventer rope.. Perhaps a bit too thick?

Looks OK to me. The holes are now a little eroded, but seem to be sized for rope about 60-70 mm in diameter, which is about the largest conventionally laid rope used for running rigging on the ship. Much thicker, and it would be so stiff that it would hinder the movement of the rudder.

Two smaller ropes = less stiffness than one thicker rope. thanks, Peter

Hi, Peter! Please help. It is necessary the list of details for "Vasa" by COREL 1:75. The only details with their numbers to set them in proper place. Draughts are not necessary.
Thanks, Vlad.

Hi Vlad,
I think there is a list in the instructions. (you just want the inventory list?, or the assembly instructions as well?) I will see if I find it when I get home.
Cheers, Peter

Hi Vlad,
There is a small (about A6) typewritten text brochure that contains both the text assembly instructions and the inventory list.
There are also a couple of A2 sheets with plans showing illustrations of mostly the wooden parts and where they go, as well as an A3 brochure with sketches of the assembly steps. (This is apart from the draughts, which is again another set of large sheets)
Is it the small brochure your friend has lost? If he has the rest, to be honest, the instruction booklet and the inventory is not of much additional help. The language is awkward and hard to follow and the inventory list is only that. A list of what's in the kit with number and description. The whole thing is typewritten. I'll follow up over email with the inventory/instruction as jpg once I'm done.
How far has your friend built, has he started already?
/Peter
