Hello, It has been awhile since I did anything Vasa related. But since I got bit by the carved furniture bug (I recently built an intricate Norse style bench), I have found something to do. My project will be a carved bed of renaissance style art, and the corner posts that sit to the sides of the headboard will be carved after Vasa's upper quarter gallery sculptures, and in full size. These pieces of wood are 16" wide by 8" thick and 55" long. I don't have a bandsaw big enough to cut these, so I have had to rough them out with chisels. It was a lot of work just to get them to the very general dimensions. Here is a picture: I will keep you updated as I progress on this. Clayton

Another. I am working on the intertwined tails on one of them. I think this part is interesting, with the tail of the lower sea monster wrapped up with the tail of the half-human half fish figure.

And the tails roughed out. I am going to work on the other one now and bring it to this point before carving the torsos.

I have started carving the intertwined tails on the other sculpture. I realized by studying pictures that these tails should be carved in much higher relief than I started doing on the first one. So I did this here, and will be going back to the other one to make it more similar to this. One thing that I did with this one is to carve the head of the lower sea monster more narrow than the originals, and put the tailfin of the half human half fish figure above to the side of his head, with the tail leading from one side of the head up and over to the other. I like this look, even though it is not like this on any of the originals.

And another. A few more hours and this one will be rough carved. I am liking how this is going.

And another. The carving on the male figure is nearly complete. I am thinking I will have these done within a week or two.
