That's really cool! What kind of wood is it?
Looks amazing!

Thank you Peter!
It seems that according to Soop that many of the upper quarter gallery roof sculptures were carved in pine. The ones that I did were done in linden/basswood.
With the extra wood required to make the back flat, or straight up and down, they weigh 50lbs a piece. The original blanks weighed 100lbs each before I started to remove wood.
I was actually kind of surprised to see that they can stand freely on their own.

Basswood sounds a lot better to carve than pine.
Heavy furniture indeed! Can't wait to see the finished result! Will it come apart for transport?

Thank you! I will keep you posted. Like the carved bench that I built, it will have the capacity to be taken apart for transport if we ever move again. It will be a job though. I just finished making the headboard design. There is definitely Vasa influence in this too.

The headboard is finished! I have the rails and foot board about half way done also, and finishing these will be the next step.

Another few parts done. I just completed the rails and foot board. They are all 20” (50.8cm) wide. The rails are 81” (205.7cm) long and the foot board is 67” (170.1cm) long. The footposts that are turned in walnut are proportional in their upper 8 inches to the knobs that decorate Vasa's lower quarter gallery turrets.

And finished today. The assembly went without any problems at all.

Hi, Clayton,
It seems, that you omitted the head of the snake. I think, this was necessary because the figure became too tall - is that right?
Cheers Alexander

Hi Alexander! Actually it is not omitted. They are at the lower end of the head posts. You just cannot see them very well because the figures are standing straight up, instead of at an angle like they are on Vasa's quarter galleries. If you visited my website you can see that I included them, even though they are different than the originals. sites.google.com/site/clayton707/carvedbed
