I noticed that the file containing a drawing of the longboat in our old Yahoo group has disappeared.
Does anyone have a copy of this file so I can try to build a 1:75 longboat instead of the bad looking boat as delivered by Corel (just a standard longboat)

I am now working on this long boat and have some questions:
- was this long boat equipped with sails and what type of sail(s)
- were there banks to sit in, and how many approximately
- stearing by ruder or beam?
these details were not clear for me on the drawing and pictures of the original and I lost the pictures of Clayton's longboat

The longboat (esping in Swedish) had a single mast with a spritsail and forestaysail (the sails survive).
There were fixed benches at the mast and in the stern, plus five removable thwarts that sat in notches in the clamp.
The boat was steered with a rudder, controlled by a straight tiller (tiller survives, but rudder is missing).

could You please say a few words when You have time, abt boat windlass construction , I mean how it was installed and kept in working position inside boat?...
* are there wholes in boat planking arranged for windlass ends or there were special reinforcement (kind of flat piece of wood attached inboard to planking) with recess to receive windlass circular ends?
* was windlass removable or permanently fixed inside boat? if it was removable, how ?
on the VASA boat fotoes I' ve seen , ... can't find clear answer ...

Hi Kirill, Happy to oblige! The windlass is removable (it was found inside the ship, in fact)and mounts in a pair of brackets nailed to the inner face of the framing. See the attached photo and reconstruction drawings, which should make the arrangement clear. |
