Hello, I'm a French 3D modelist, working for a modelism company. Firstly, please forgive my written english, which unfortunatly is not very good - and my spoken english is worse ! My company wants to produce a wooden model in a kit form of the Vasa (scale 1/70). So I have to reproduce the Vasa, by computer, as accurate as possible. After that, the 3D files will be printed in 3D to make a faithfull replica. The real issue is for all the many sculptures. It's a very big work. We are convinced the best way to do that would be to use the 3D scan technology. Then my questions are : - Do you know if the Vasa has already been scanned ? - In this case, do you know if it would be possible for my company to use the files from the 3D scans ? Of course, according conditions (price, rights...) of the owner - In opposite case, do you know if it would be possible for me to go to the vasamuseet to scan myself the Vasa ? - In this case, do you know what kind of 3D scanner it would be preferable to use (taking into account accessibility...) ? In advance, thank you very much.

Hi Cedric,
This is a request that we get fairly often (you are the second company in the last ten days), and needs to be answered by someone higher on the food chain than I am, since it involves commercial rights and the use of our brand. We have had several companies interested in producing Vasa models, and we have collaborated with some of them, with varied results. We do have a scan of the ship, as well as digital documentation of other kinds, but we will probably wait until we have published that data ourselves before making it available. It also needs to be remembered that a scan shows the ship as it is today, not as it was built (dimensional differences up to 25 cm). In the case of your company, we would want to see what kind of kits you produce, at what quality and price level, and have some indication of what your track record is in working with other museums and source material.
I would suggest that you write to the director of the museum, Magnus Olofsson (magnus.olofsson@maritima.se), with your request.

Thank you very much Fred for your prompt answer. Then I will inform my company to contact directly Magnus Olofsson by email, as you suggest. Because for these topics (kind of kits, quality and level, track record...) I'm not skilled to reply accurately. Well noted for the dimentional differences. In spite of that, that would be really sad (especially for me) if we can not use digital documentation because it would be a huge amount of time saved ! Many thanks again.
