Meanwhile, I have also carved the coat of arms. It is composed of five smaller shilds and a crown. Likewise, I mounted it tentative . The Lions have to be even closer together and keep the crown with the paws. This does not fit yet. The signs still sits wrong. These figures were all carved in original by the master carver of the Vasa, Mårten Redtmer. This quality of expression, I'm far away to keep up as a hobbyist. This Coat of Arms must in the original have huge weight. And this at an height that was certainly not very conducive to the stability of the ship. Cheers, Alexander

After the interesting discussion in old warshipwasa site, I discussed the researches of the Vasamuseet with model colleagues some time ago. Peter Rückert from Augsburg presumed: Considering the short comissioning of the ship it may be possible, the final structural state has not been reached yet. Time and money ran out to the Vasawarvet at their last finishing steps. This may be an explanation for the missing of railings at the decks aft. It would be interesting to hear Fred's opion on this assumption.
We should be consistently adhered to the museum and archaeological facts and rules and so I will not build rails on my model.
Cheers, Alexander

An intermediate level of my current carvings for the coat-of arms Lions. First of all, the rear mirror of the original in Stockholm. That's the ambitious goal. Preparation of boxwood for the right and left lions. Because it was difficult to estimate how high the tail is relative to the head, I made a rough draft to scale from Milliput. (This is the white figure on the right) Here you can see that I have the lion cut off the heel. Heel patched up Here are the figures in the present state But the figures are not done yet! Some things need some work to fit properly. I must revise further and then pry them off from the base. Extremely helpful again the clean drawings of Wolfram zu Mondfeld (from the accompanying book). It's phenomenal how well the drawings match the photos and also the dimensional accuracy is one hundred percent. - To be continued ! - Regards, Alexander

Has now taken some time. But the painting with oil paint is because of the long drying times always somewhat time consuming. Particularly, if something fails and must be replaced. The troop of Roman Warriors with windinstruments and torches I have made because of their smallness out of Milliput-putty. The size is about 1.5 to 2 cm. In transparent boxes I sorted the appropriate instrumets and possibly torches. Here are the 7 figures finished mounted to the stern. Located between the upper and lower galleries are grotesque console heads. I have taken their shape off the model with Milliput. Then I carved the characters in box. Side galleries fitted so far in comparison with the original The stern now looks like this: And again the painted hermfigures. Alexander

Thank you, Matti
I use boxwood for carving. It's pretty dense and much fun to work with.

I just finished the two herms at the ship's sides. They were used for the tacks of the main sail. It's missing the painting Alexander

no, my Vasa is being built without rigging. I like it better and the model will not take so much space, when it's finished.

Hi Clayton,
a very aerial solution. It looks like the model stands free.
Also the idea with the space for books is nice. Very homelike.
