Hello,
I am currently building the Vasa from the Corel kit. I have 2 items that I am trying to resolve:
1. The Corel kit shows tackle rigging between the foremast and mainmast (for cargo hauling?), however, the Vasa 1/10th does not show this rigging. Does anyone know if this existed or not?
2. Did the Vasa have foot ropes on the yards? All the photos of different builds and the 1/10 do not show any.
Any help would be appreciated!
Thank you,
Frank

Hi Frank,
Vasa had no foot ropes on the yards
About the last tackle I think this is not proven that Vasa had any.
Cheers, Alexander

Hello Alexander! Thank you for your reply. It is appreciated. So, I think I will leave off the tackle, since it is not proven that Vasa had any. As for the foot ropes, I will leave them off also. I do wonder how the sailors would have managed to get around the yards. I guess they did not have workman's comp back then!! Thanks for the help, Frank

as far as i know, footropes did not exist on dutch ships until well into the 1700-dreds. Any footropes on replica's of that time , such as batavia, are based on modern health and safety regulations, not on historical accuracy
The main tackle shown on all thses models was rigged only when there was something to tackle. When sailing, that tackle was removed. I guess that that practice did also exist in Sweden. You need such a heavy tackle to get your guns onto the lower gundeck. When everything is on board, the tackle can be removed.

This scene from Wahlgren's film is an anachronism Alexander

Looks to me that Batavia was used for these scenes.

in modern replica's they modified these (mostly for safety reasons) although these are not historically correct
